The use of ozone in food production has now reached farm level where it is used in poultry production. By dozing limited amount of ozone into the production environment seems to keep down bacterial growth and possibly break down harmful gaseous compounds that are by products in poultry production. It is also believed that animals utilizes the feed better, are healthier and are less likely to become sick when ozone is used. Therefore less vaccines and drugs should be needed during the production which again means healthier products for the consumer.
Ozone is used in the poultry industry as air and water treatments for the storage, incubation of eggs and breeding of healthy birds.
Drinking water for poultry is an important dietary requirement. Under normal conditions, birds will consume, approximately, double the quantity as food on weight basis
Some applications of Ozone in Poultry & Hatchery are
a. Ozone is used to disinfect incubation rooms and chambers, eliminate use of chemicals which cause a toxic build-up on the egg shell surfaces and weaken the immune system of the birds, and keeping the air which is fed into the incubators free from bacteria and viruses.
b. Ozonated water is more effective, faster and stronger than chlorinated water, killing all bacteria and viruses, including those that have become resistant to chlorine and conventional cleaning methods. There is no resistance build-up to ozone.
c. To disinfect equipment, machinery and packaging materials overnight, and to keep bacteria levels in the area low during the day.
d. In the refrigerated storage of poultry products to increase the shelf life of the meat and prevent spoilage.
e. In growing birds, ozone in the pens as a gas reduces the amount of bacteria that they are exposed to thus reducing the spread of infection and viruses thereby increasing their health and even weight by up to 18% and improving their skin colour.
f. For the disinfecting of sheds as an alternative to formaldehyde, because ozone is more effective than formaldehyde in disinfecting and requires no dormant period in which the sheds have to remain evacuated.
g. Ozone oxidizes ammoniacal gases, methane and carbon dioxide, creating a healthier environment for the animals and staff.
h. Hatching hens which are kept in ozonized conditions show an increase in the amount of eggs they lay, and a stronger consistency of the egg shell, because of the corresponding decrease in pathogenic illness and prevention of a toxic build-up of disinfectant chemicals.
Benefits of Ozone in Poultry and Hatchery
The most important advantage of using ozone is that it quicker and more reactive and leaves no chemical residue, and even after high concentrations have been used to disinfect an area, it is immediately possible for staff to work in that area without a health risk.

Aeolus is leading manufacturer and supplier of Ozone generators for numerous applications including Aquaculture.
In recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), particulates including faeces, uneaten feed, bacteria, and algae can cause several problems, in that they may harbour pathogens, can physically irritate the fish, and upon decomposition, release ammonia and consume oxygen.
Bacterial and viral diseases create serious problems in semi-intensive and intensive aquaculture. Use of surface water in flow-through systems represents a risk of contamination by introducing waterborne fish pathogenic microorganisms. Such contamination results in heavy losses in aquaculture worldwide, and has also limited the progress in commercial farming of new aqua cultural species.
Ozone is used in aquaculture systems as a disinfectant, to remove organic carbon, and also to remove turbidity, algae, colour, odor and taste. Ozone can effectively inactivate a range of bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoan fish pathogens.
The effectiveness of ozone treatment depends on ozone concentration, length of ozone exposure (contact time), pathogen loads and levels of organic matter. In spite of ozone is a very effective oxidizing agent, higher ozone concentrations are a risk to cultured fish stocks causing gross tissue damage and stock mortalities, and also are a risk to bacterial films on the bio filter.
Ozone has seen wide use in aquaculture because it has a rapid reaction rate, produces few harmful reaction by-products in freshwater and oxygen is produced as a reaction end-product. Ozone is an extremely reactive oxidant and a very effective bactericide and viricide.
Ozone can also be used to achieve water quality improvements by micro flocculating fine particulate matter and oxidizing non-biodegradable organic molecules like nitrite, and refractory organic molecules (reducing water colour)
Ozone is increasingly used in aquaculture due to its numerous advantages over traditional water treatment methods. Supplementing or replacing an existing system, ozone implementation has the potential to boost the competitive advantage of your aquaculture application.
